Diaper Bag

A close friend is going to be a Great Grandma! – Of course she was a Grandma of 5 before 50 – so this is not as much of a surprise as one might think.

To help the new mom (her grand-daughter) out, she is making quilts, car seat covers, changing pads and more! She asked if i might want to fill some time and make a large tote for a diaper bag.

I decided to give it a try. Since the mom to be is young, my vintage fabrics didn’t seem to be quite her style. It is know that baby will be a girl!

I got to go fabric shopping! – It took almost 2.5 hours of choosing, putting back and exploring. I wanted something young, fun, and for a girl – but also wanted something practical for a new young mom that was washable and sturdy.

I settled on this fabric combination.

I am not one to follow patterns and seem to always tweak on the first try. I wanted this bag to be solid. I used fusible stabilizers and an ultra firm sew in interface. What I didn’t realize was this pattern had quite a bit of sewing in the center. It was quite a challenge to get the stiff pieces to fit through the arm of my machine and sew straight! I broke 4 needles on this project – but it seems to have come out okay.

There are two 8 inch slip pockets, a zipper divider pocket on the inside. Two outside pockets and a loop to keep the bag closed.

Not sure if I will do this again. Perhaps a different pattern style. But I do like the little hedgehogs. 🙂
