Hedgehogs In Process

I am working on 2 bags made from a selection of hedgehog fabrics I purchased at the Sewing Basket in downtown Plymouth. This is a bag from new fabrics – but will serve as a vintage function – Diaper bag or New Mom Tote.

I recently had a chance to learn and try how to piece fabrics as quilters do. I had been doing combining pieces, but really didn’t know some of the finer details like setting the seam, matching the seams in a special way, squaring off, etc. While my previous work has been good-  knowing the correct process makes it much more enjoyable and less frustrating to do. It is so neat to see the corners come out and for things to align as you build a block.

Most of my work I start with something and build from it. I am seeing some buttons being added for detail. And as with most of my bags – I want this to be able to function and stand up to things – so most likely one will have some ultra firm stabilizer for diaper bag use. The second, batting interfacing and a medium stabilizer to make it more flexible to be used as a New Mom Tote. I am also thinking it needs some inside pockets. That is another detail to figure out, but I think essential for these bags.

Instead of creating cloth handles, these will have web handles for greater strength.

And now that these are underway I can see how the leftover pieces of the vintage cloth could be pieced and blocked to create a bag. I have a specific one in mind that I had tried working with but ended up adding it to my crumb quilt after things just didn’t work out to my standards. Now I am really excited to get back to that cloth!

But first – to finish these.
