Y- Seams!!!

Sunday Sew Day!
I was given a sack of cut vintage fabric quilt pieces. In the sack were also 3 newspaper patterns from the 1940’s. Like Dear Abby – there were syndicated column personalities who wrote under different pen names. There are researchers and others who collect and write about these patterns – and the theme is “Piecing without pain, highly unlikely!”  (Read about Alice Brooks here).

There were pieces of a good size to be able to try one of the block patterns. The Brunswick Star by Alice Brooks.

WOW! For those who sew the block contained more than 30 Y Seams. Over time – usingmath, and updated tools has given us easier (smarter) ways to put things together. I can’t imagine making 48 of these blocks for a quilt if this was the process. Makes it amazing at how much work is in a vintage quilt for sure.
It was fun – and a challenge – so made a nice Sunday. I am not sure if this block will end up in a quilt or not – but seems it should
